Ranching In Swimtrunks

The venture into rotational grazing required some aquatic ranching today. I didn’t realize that the pond I had turned them out along was shallow enough that the cows could stroll right through it. Given that the little one was taught cameras last night, she was brought along to document.
Look, no tan lines!

Two peas in a pod. (An organically grown GMO pod of course)

It’s been a while since good old Steve Cornett at Beef Today has said anything interesting, but his commentary on the upcoming hoopla over Eric Schlosser’s movie Food Inc. is worth a mention. Schlosser has made an easy career pointing out the unsavory side of modern America’s industrialized food system, but like most [...]

George Will On Pollan

George Will is a bit late to this party, about three years to be exact, but he has a column on Michael Pollan and corn, of course. He reviews the standard points of the “Pollan Premise”, ya know, cheap subsidized corn is fed to American livestock and makes people fat. But Will fails [...]

Hunger Is In

It’s sometimes hard to put your finger on, but it’s definitely becoming apparent that “The Global Food Crisis” on track to be the new excuse for wannabe nanny staters and outright totalitarians. Replacing discredited Al Gore with the previously discredited Malthus, predictions of coming shortages and famine are all the rage these days. [...]

Damage is damage right?

There’s not much that irks me more than meddling enviro-lawyers with a flair for lawsuits. Especially when their labors don’t result in any of the protections they claim to intend. It’s enough to make one wonder if their motivations are more anti capitalist than they are anti pollution…
DAYVILLE, Ore. (AP)–To protect fish, the [...]

Dairy Buyout Dead?

Well at least the government funded dairy buyout…
The lobby dudes at NCBA tell me they “jumped on it early” while it was still a trial balloon, and said balloon is now deflated.
Great. It sounds like the dairy folks will use their own money to buy each other out of business. Sort of like a privately-funded [...]

Not so COOL as we’ve been led to believe

Remember speculating on the unintended consequences of Country of Origin Labeling?  They’re starting to take shape…
“CattleFax estimates that, at the very least, it will cost cattle producers $50 to $60 per head if we lose the NAFTA export markets,” Daley said. “In addition to the large volume of variety meats that we export to Mexico, [...]

I love me some unintended consequences!

Though lately I suspect that Washington might know damn well the things their well intentioned meddling does in the long run…

The proposal would use taxpayer dollars to raise dairy prices by buying older dairy cows from farmers, taking approximately 6.5 billion gallons of milk off the market. This would result in nearly 320,000 additional head [...]

It’s what’s for dinner…

A comprehensive, (but very long) article detailing the modern incarnation of commercial beef from the well meaning hippies at Mother Earth News.
Be warned, the hippies have a slow server at times.
*In the interest of full disclosure, my freezer is currently filled with a naturally raised, chemical free steer. You could come over, I [...]
